I’ve been recently thinking about summer only (in general, I really love the idea of summer – just like Olaf does!). Beaches, drinks, waves, heat, sunglasses and constant relax. So, I’m in perfect mood to write second part of post about my trip to
Santander.
Beaches
As I wrote you before, there are a lot of beaches in Santander. But The Spanish Bride took us to Playa de la Arnia – soooo FAB! Rocks, white sand and amazing sea color looked gorgeous!
There is a restaurant on the cliff – Bar Restaurante El Cazurro. Great idea – you can have a meal, drink or coffee and watch a brilliant view at the same time.
The only minus – you need a car to get there.
Food
In my travels everything is about the food: where we will eat a dinner, where I can but the perfect baguette, which gelateria has the best ice creams! I don’t buy regular souvenirs – I buy olive oil, wines, spices, herbs, Speculoos etc.
When we were in Santander, there was a Semana Grande. You could find places with pinchos y bebita (tapas and drinks) in almost every place in town. By pinchos I mean: tortillas, mini hamburgers, fried chicken wings, salads, sea food, grilled meat, vegetables, fishes etc. Pinchos y bebita were extremely popular – all of the citizens and tourists were hanging out together every single evening. It was so cool!
If you want to eat some fresh sea food – you have to go the port. Those restaurants are more like Centro Cabraliego in Brussels. You won’t find fancy food or designed interiors. Everything is simple. The only additions to dishes are: baguettes, lemon, oil and wine. Simple and perfect!
The one and only place to eat a dessert is Regma – delicious ice creams (better ice creams I ate only in San Miniato in Tuscany). I don’t have any photo –you have to believe me or google Regma.
Important tip – eating lunch/dinner is possible till 4 p.m. max. After that time cooks don’t work and it’s possible to eat pinchos only (that was the first unpleasant lesson I’ve been taught).
Evenings
Pinchos + wine. You need nothing more!
The very first day we visited terrace bar of Balneario de la Concha restaurant. Nice place, delicious drinks, chill-out music, perfect view – summer essentials.
Sightseeing
Santander is a place for relax, not for sightseeing/museum visiting. That is why we went to Bilbao. We heard something about a bank holiday in Cantabria, so we went to a tourist office to see if in Basque Country people also have a day off. Lady in a Tourist Centre told us it’s a great idea to go to Bilbao because the bank holiday is in Cantabria only….Yeah, right! Everything was closed and town was completely empty.
We went to Guggenheim Museum, which was open. The architecture is amazing, but the exhibitions inside – not so impressive (sorry, but Yoko Ono is not an artist: putting a shoe next to a chair, an apple and an empty bottle in not an art! Seriously!).
Because it was a bank holiday we decided to go to the old town to eat a lunch. In the old town everything should be opened – but not in Bilbao. In the first restaurant they were run out the food (?!!) in the second one – I’d like to forget the meal, it wasn’t good.
As you might suspect the trip to Bilbao wasn’t my favorite one. Oh, and the whole way back to Santander, some girls in the bus was receiving WhatsApp messages every two-three minutes (yep, the sound of incoming texts was irritating) – I wanted to throw off their mobiles (these teenagers!!!).
The next post will be also all about summer – stay tuned!
Bisous :*

Balnerario de la concha…A love it to breakfast in winter, when is rainny or windy out, with the angry sea in the other side of the window
